Description

This extraordinary Tiffany & Co. sterling silver 'Persian' Elephant Centerpiece Bowl was produced circa 1880–1881 under the direction of Edward C. Moore, the firm’s legendary head of silver design. Likely hand-chased by master silversmith Eugene Soligny, the bowl features the opulent “Panel with Dahlias & Peonies” decoration—an elaborate and highly labor-intensive motif that represented the most luxurious option available for this form. Drawing inspiration from a related 1874–1875 pitcher now in the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this piece exemplifies the exotic Persian Revival aesthetic that captivated Tiffany’s clientele during the Gilded Age.
