Description

This map epitomizes the golden age of Dutch cartography, circa 1630. Decorating the borders are representations of the four elements and other scenes. Portraits of Julius Caesar, Claudius Ptollemy, and mapmakers Jodocus Hondius and Gerard Mercator adorn the corners. Of note are the descriptions of California as an island, an expansive Canada, and a massive Australian continent.
