The $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle is one of the most renowned coins in American history, born out of the California Gold Rush. Authorized in 1849, it was the highest denomination of U.S. gold coinage and remained in production until 1907. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse portrays Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” while the reverse features a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows—symbols of strength, protection, and peace. Struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, the coin weighs 33.44 grams and measures 34 mm in diameter, giving it an impressive presence. Widely used in commerce and international trade, the Liberty Double Eagle stands today as a powerful emblem of America’s 19th-century prosperity and artistry.
