The $1 Gold Liberty coin is a remarkable piece of U.S. numismatic history, representing the smallest denomination of American gold coinage. First authorized in 1849 during the California Gold Rush, it was minted until 1889 across three distinct types.

Type 1 (1849–1854): A portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet, measuring 13 mm in diameter.

Type 2 (1854–1856): A new design featuring an Indian Princess head, slightly larger at 15 mm.

Type 3 (1856–1889): A refined Indian Princess head with a fuller portrait, also 15 mm.

Struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, the coin weighs just 1.67 grams, yet its artistry and rarity make it highly admired. The obverse varies by type, while the reverse typically shows an agricultural wreath with the denomination. The Gold Dollar circulated during a transformative period in American history and today stands as a delicate yet enduring symbol of the nation’s coinage heritage.
